Day 8: To Venice

Today we embark on an all-day drive to Venice. Estimated drive time is 7 hours. So, we made an early start, meeting Jean at our coach at 7:45 am. As we left Reutte, we passed Ehrenberg Castle the suspension bridge. Several in our group visited Ehrenberg yesterday and walked across the suspension bridge. I is suppose to be the longest suspension bridge in the world. We traveled through the mountains through Fern Pass and Jean stopped to let us view the tallest mountain in Austria-Zugspitz. We headed through Innsbruck and crossed the Europabrucke. It used to be the highest bridge in Europe until 1974 when the Sfalassa Gorge and Italia Viaducts opened. Then we headed the Brenner Pass into Italy. The Dolomites were beautiful. The highway ran through a valley between two mountain ranges. We stopped in Kaltern for an authentic Italian pizza lunch. It was so delicious. Then it was back on the coach to Venice. We left the mountains for the rolling farmlands-vineyards, sunflower fields. So beautiful. We reached the vaporetto dock around 4:15 pm. We passed under the Rialto Bridge before we docked. We are in Venice!!! We checked into our hotel then Jody gave us a walking tour to St. Mark's Square, Doges Palace, then walked back to the Rialto Bridge. Then we had a group dinner of fish, pasta, bread and pudding. It was 9:15 pm and time to walk back to the hotel. A long day-time for bed.
