Day 4: Bacharach/Rheinfels Castle

Wednesday, June 26,2019

Today ended up being a very hot day-we are in the heat wave affecting all of Europe. It got to 98 degrees today and we have no air conditioning! I tried to stay in the shade where I could and drink lots of water. We started the day with a walking tour of Bacharach with our local guide, Thomas.  I learned a lot about Bacharach's history. It was very interesting. After our tour was over, we had a brief rest before boarding our coach with Jean to depart for St. Goar. Thomas had a surprise for us before we left. He gave us samples of sweet donuts called "Americans".  Then we boarded the coach and took the 25 minute drive to St. Goar. There, we had a group lunch at a local restaurant and enjoyed German sausage, sauerkraut and potatoes served family style. It was delicious! We had some free time to wander St. Goar before meeting for our appointment at Rheinfels castle. I enjoyed walking through St. Goar and seeing the quaint shops. I was surprised how empty the town was though-perhaps because of the heat? I expected a lot of tourists. Maybe they come out in the evening.

I took the shuttle to Rheinfels. We me our guide, Gabby. Touring the ruins was very interesting and Gabby was full of information on the history of Rheinfels. After the tour, I decided to walk back into town. The views of the Rhine were beautiful. We met our boat and took a cruise back to Bacharach. Then the evening was ours to do as we wished. I rested for a while from the heat, then headed out to explore the town and climb up to the vineyards around 8:00 pm when it cooled off. I enjoyed the view of the town from the top of the hill as the sun was setting. It was a great day, but now time for bed as we head for Rothenburg tomorrow!
