Day 5: Rothenburg

Today is a travel day to Rothenburg. We had an early start departing Bacharach by 8:00 am. We walked out of town with our suitcases in tow to where the coach was parked near the river. We had a 4 hour bus ride with a rest stop after 2 hours. Jody said to pay close attention to the toilets at the rest stop. They cost 50 cents but they you were given a voucher to use at McDonalds. The toilet seats spin and disinfect when you flush! I had never seen anything like it! I had to take a video!

We arrive in Rothenburg around 12:30 pm. The coach parked outside the medieval wall and we walked to our hotel. Our rooms were ready when we arrived so we were able to check in. We had 30 minutes to settle in, then met in the back garden for a walking tour with Jody and Filippo. They walked us to the market square and to St. Jakob's church. This gave us a brief orientation, then we were on our own the rest of the day until the 8 pm Nightwatchman's tour.

I followed the Rick Steves Rothenburg walk guide. I first stopped to see the Altar of the Holy Blood at St. Jakob's, carved in 1499 AD by Tilman Riemenschneider. It stands 35 feet high. I made my way through town, circled back through the Market Square, then stopped at a market for some take-out dinner. I had time to walk the old medieval wall before meeting for the Nightwatchman tour.

The Nightwatchman (Hans-Georg Baumgartner) was so funny and entertaining. He jokes as he gives us the history of Rothenburg. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
