Rome

June, 2018

I began the day at 6 am. Joyce and I were down to breakfast (a feast!) by 7:15 am. We met Cecilia in front of our hotel at 8:40 am for a tour of San Clemente - a "three layer" church. The lowest level is the Temple of Mithras that dates back to the second century, the middle layer is a fourth century Christian church and the top level is 12th century Christian. We were shown around by our local guide, Alesandra. No photos were allowed in San Clemente. From there, Alesandra took us for our tour of the Colosseum, then lunch at Cavour 33 which was near the Forum.  We then toured the Forum with Alesandra and she explained the history. Once the tour was over, we were free to explore as we wanted. Joyce and I decided to visit Palatine Hill for 1 1/2 hours. After that, we headed back to the hotel to rest and cool off. For dinner, Joyce and I decided to visit a Pizza restaurant a few blocks down and we were glad we did. It was a very popular place and the food was delicious! After dinner, I spent what was left of my evening writing in my travel journal. What a day!
