Tour Day 10 Wednesday, June 22

Gwennap, Pasties, Greevor  Tin Mine

Skies looked cloudy today, so I left the hotel prepared for rain. After breakfast, we loaded onto our coach and first headed for Gwennap Pit. It is a hollow created by mining activities, but became an open air amphitheater made famous by John Wesley who preached there because of it's acoustic properties from 1762 - 1789. The coach parked on the road and we walked a narrow farm lane to get to the Pit-observed by a friendly horse and dog. After visiting the Pit, we headed for Portreath to make pasties-delicious meat and veggie pies. We were assisted by Marion, the owner, who gave us a tour and history of her bakery, then led us to the back to show us how pasties are made. We each made our own and they were baked right on the spot. When completed, we took them with us to our next destination-Geevor Tin Mine. The weather was not cooperating, so we discreetly took them into their restaurant, bought a drink, and sat at their table to eat. They were DELICIOUS and very filling. Once we completed lunch, we divided into two groups-one to tour the above-ground operations of the old mine, and one group that toured the underground tunnels. I enjoyed the above-ground tour, but when I entered the tunnels, I only made it about 30 yards, then had to leave. Too dark and tight for me! Everyone that went through enjoyed it though.
