Tour Day 8  Monday, June 20

Dartmoor National Park

This morning, we loaded onto our coach in the rain, headed for Dartmoor National Park. We were greeted by our local guide, Tom. He is a native of Dartmoor. We drove into the park and our first stop was at Postbridge. It was still raining, but no one cared. We grabbed our umbrellas and hiked down to see Clapper Bridge from the coach parking lot.  Clapper Bridge was built in

1380  AD from stone slabs 13 feet long. The water was running high from all the rain we have had over the past 2 days. We still braved the weather to get our pictures. Getting back to the coach, we headed for Merrivale to hike up the moor to see the row of stones and stone circles. Walking up the hill to the stones was like walking in a bog.  Next, we headed for Widecombe -In-The-Moor for lunch at the Cafe On The Green. The rain subsided , so after lunch we walked about the village and visited St. Pancras Church. Finally, we drove through more of Dartmoor until we arrived at Hator Vale. We  got out of the coach and started walking to the top of the Tor. There was quite a view of the park from here! It was worth the hike up! Alas, it was time to return to  Chagford for an evening of exploring on our own. Such a great day in spite of the rain.
