Tour Day 3, Wednesday, June 15
Battle of Britain Memorial, Dover Castle, and Goodnestone Gardens
Today we boarded the bus and headed for Dover to visit Dover Castle. On the way, we stopped at the Battle of Britain Memorial at Capel-le-Ferne. This sight honors the aviators that died during the Battle of Britain. It was a brief stop and then we were on to Dover. The sight of Dover Castle on the hill as we entered the town was awe-inspiring. We arrived early enough to beat the crowds. Our coach parked in the lower coach lot and we walked up the hill to the Castle. We toured the war-time tunnels (no photos allowed), then were on our own to explore. After several hours, we met our coach back at the lot and headed for Goodnestone Gardens. It was a delight to wander in the woodland and formal gardens after the hub-bub of the Castle. We headed back to Canterbury around 5:00 pm to have dinner on our own, pack, and prepare to depart for Alfriston the next day.
