Tour Day 2  Tuesday, June 14

Canterbury

After a hearty breakfast at our hotel, our group gathered and headed for Canterbury Cathedral for our tour. Once we arrive in the light rain, we were divided into two groups. The first group would tour the Stained Glass shop and the other group would tour Canterbury Cathedral. The Stained Glass workshop is too small for a large group of 22 people. I was part of the first group to visit the Stained Glass workshop. We headed up a set of stairs and were met by Fernando, a very friendly craftsman. He had 20 years experience and his knowledge was extensive. He explained the restoration process in detail and showed us examples of his work. It was very impressive. After our tour of the workshop, we headed back outside to take pictures of the Cathedral before our tour began. Once they were ready, we were lead into the Cathedral by Sarah, our wonderful guide. Sarah gave us a one-hour tour of the Cathedral, Cloisters and Crypt. Her knowledge was extensive. Once the tour was over, we were free for the rest of the day until dinner. I took this opportunity to go back to St. Martin's Church to visit it before it closed. The guide inside the church was very friendly and told me a brief history of the church. Then I wandered the cemetery, then sat on a bench to enjoy the quiet. I headed back into town and had time to take the River Stour boat tour before we were to meet for dinner. Once we all gathered back at the hotel, we boarded a bus for Whitestable for a fish-and-chips dinner. Whitestable is a beautiful sea-side town and our restaurant, The Lobster Shack was right on the sea. The dinner was fresh and delicious! Afterwards, we headed back to Canterbury and it was time for bed! A wonderful day!
