Clava Cairns

Our next stop for the day is Clava Cairns. Rick Steves' guidebook quotes Clava Cairns prehistoric site as "the best preserved, most interesting, and easiest to reach". These Neolithic burial chambers date from 3,000 to 4,000 years ago. I find these sites very interesting. They look like just a giant pile of rocks, but in fact they are very well thought out. There are three cairns. The central one appears as only a pile of stones, but had the center open. The other two have passages that you can enter. The passages of the cairns line up with the setting sun at the winter solstice. I am amazed by the engineering of these Neolithic peoples! The cairns are surrounded by standing stones.
