Isle of Iona

Our ferry ride to Iona only took 10 minutes. We met our guide, Rebecca, who lives on the island. Iona is very small-1 mile wide and 3 miles long. While there, we visited the ruins of the Nunnery, saw Iona Abbey which represents the arrival of Christianity in Scotland by St. Columba in the 1200's and we toured the church and cloisters. It is believed that the Celtic Cross originated here. After our tour, we were free to wander the island. Some headed to the beach, some rented bicycles, but I revisited the places Rebecca showed us to spend a little more time. I found the SPAR grocery and had a picnic lunch near the beach. It was a beautiful, sunny day. After my lunch, I went to the beach to collect shells and sand. The sand was so white. Children were playing in the water even though I thought the water was cold. It didn't seem to bother them!
