Leault Sheep Farm

Today we pack up to leave Kenmore. It is time to head into the Highlands! We leave at 8:00 AM and drive about 40 miles to our first stop-Leault Sheep Farm. It is a cloudy day, but not raining. Neil runs the farm and has bred sheepdogs and taken care of sheep all his life. He is passionate about his job and eager to share his expertise. I was delighted to find out his wife is from Denver, near my hometown! Neil demonstrated how he can get his dogs to herd the sheep with just whistles. Amazing! I enjoyed watching them at work. Then he demonstrated the shearing process. He does it with hand shears. We were given an opportunity to try shearing ourselves. Then he brought out the puppies-the highlight of our visit. Neil reinforced that they are not pets, but are trained to be working dogs. They were so cute! We all got a chance to hold and hug them and were trying to think of ways to hide them in our luggage to take them home! They were adorable!!! After our visit at the sheep farm, Liz took us to Rowan Tree Country Hotel for a light lunch of soup, bread and scones! We were entertained by a cooking demonstration after our lunch on how they make the scones and we were given a recipe! Both yummy and educational! I find the Rick Steves trips always throw in these extras!
