14 Day Best of England 2016
Avebury
The Avebury stone circle is 16 times the size of Stonehenge. You are free to wander among the 100 stones, ditches and mounds. The town of Avebury grew up in the middle of the circle. The circle was constructed 3000 BC. It is the largest megalithic stone circle in the world. It was constructed over several hundred years. The monument comprises a large henge (a bank and ditch) with a large outer stone circle and two separate smaller stone circles situated inside the center of the monument. It is roughly a half-mile walk around the circle. Originally, two smaller circles made of about 200 stones stood within the henge. While I was there, the rain was coming down hard and and the wind was blowing it sideways! My umbrella turned inside-out and I was soaked through my rain jacket. The rest of the tour group headed for the pub to stay warm and dry. I was determined to walk along the stones. I didn't travel 6,000 miles to sit in a pub!

On the way to Avebury, our coach stopped to let us take a picture of the chalk horse on the hill.
Traveling to Avebury, we saw an obelisk on the hill, a monument to some important earl. It was near the chalk horse.
Sheep graze in the field around the stones.
