14 Day Best of England 2016

York Tour

We started our day meeting in the hotel lounge for breakfast starting at 7:30 am. The lounge was very unique. The lights were bowler hats! Also on the wall was bow tie art! After our breakfast, we met Jamie at 9:30 am for a walking tour of York. We started at the Museum Gardens and saw the remains of St. Mary's Abbey. The abbey dates back to William the Conqueror. The church became an abbey that thrived from the 1200's until the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 1500's. Next we viewed the Multangular Tower-a 12-sided tower (300 A.D.) is probably a catapult station built to protect the town from the enemy. There is also the remains of the old wall here. The lower stones are roman and the upper stones are medieval.  York Minster was the next visit. We could not go inside today because there was a concert and it was not open to the public during the day. I would come back for Evensong, though. Next to the Minster stands a Roman Column, erected in 1971 to celebrate the 1900th anniversary of the founding of York in 71 AD. We circled the Minster and visited Dean's Park where groups of school children were playing. So cute! Lastly, we headed for Merchant's Hall for a guided tour. We were on our own for the rest of the day and I spent my time walking the wall and touring the old city on my own. I visited York Minster for the 5:15 Evensong Service. Several other group members were there for the service. I must have walked miles today! It was a great day!! The evening (I didn't get back to the hotel until 8:30 pm) was spent writing in my journal and organizing my pack for our departure tomorrow.
