14 Day Best of England 2016
Stanway House
Stanway House is in the Cotswolds and is owned and lived in by the Earl of Wemyss whose family tree dates back to 1202. He opens his home two days a week for tours. The Earl restored the fountain on the grounds-300 feet tall, gravity-powered and the tallest fountain in Britain. The Tithe Barn on the site dates to the 1300's and while we were visiting, it was being set up for a wedding. Near the tithe barn is a cricket field also. We were given a tour of the manor (no photos allowed as it is a private residence; however I was able to find photos on the internet) and we also toured the watermill and grounds. It is a beautiful and peaceful manor and I enjoyed walking the grounds and seeing the amazing fountain in action. Swans inhabited the lake. After we finished our tour, Jamie took us to the cricket field to teach those that were interested the game. I decided to watch from the stand. As they played, a groundskeeper showed up with a tractor to mow the cricket field! I guess that was our signal to depart!
