14 Day Best of England 2016
Stokesay Castle
We were up and out of our hotel early to head for Stokesay Castle. It took us about 2 hours to get there. Once we arrived, it was still early enough that it was not crowded. Stokesay Castle is a fortified manor house. It was built in the late 1200's by Laurence of Ludlow, then the leading wool merchant in England. It underwent various ownerships and renovations, and eventually because a popular destination for tourists in 1908. It was obtained by the English Heritage in 1986. English Heritage carried out extensive restoration of the castle in the 1980's. It now receives about 40,000 visitors a year. Stokesay is one of the best-preserved medieval fortified manor houses in England.
Part of our visit to Stokesay Castle included an English Tea complete with scones and clotted cream. I was so engrossed in my audio tour that I ran out of time before having to meet the coach and I missed my tea!
